February 9, 2012
I decided to make a wall hanging for my friend who is moving away and give it to her at the goodbye breakfast on February 14, 2012. I have 5 days to finish this project.
I sewed the multiple greens and blue strips together back in the Fall of 2010. I modified a design I saw in a book about modern quilting that I checked out from the library. The original was bigger and in multiple blacks with the white strip. I modified the size to fit over the mantle in the family room and I changed the color to greens with a blue stripe.
I put the project on hold when I found the Modern Quilt Guild challenges and worked on those for a year, as well as some side projects. Now I am back to my UFOs. I decided to finish this piece " Land and Sky". In my sewing the strips I went a little crazy and miscounted the blocks I needed, forgetting each strip made 2-4" blocks. So, luckily I have extra. I will use these for my friend's quilt.
Here I am cutting the strips into 2-4" blocks on the rotating cutting board. Love this!
I put the squares on the design wall and I am ready to start chain sewing the rows together.
I just started using a new needle for piecing called a microtex 70/10 by Schmetz. I purchased it online form Pink Chalk Fabrics-my new favorite online store for fabrics, etc. I like it after an hour and a half of piecing.
All pieced together. Both landscape and vertical look good. Hmmm.
Right now it measures width-28 1/4" vs height-21 1/2".
I will cut the backing, batting, and try to free motion quilt it tomorrow. I work well with a deadline.
